  5. Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Win32s and Win16 versions

  11. I.  Introduction
  12.  
  13. e-Mail Notify is a Winsock complient Biff Internet e-Mail client.
  14. It will connect to your POP3 server for you and retrieve
  15. the headers of any e-mail waiting there for you.
  16. You can configure e-Mail Notify very extensively to warn
  17. you about new mail.
  18. If it runs in Windows 95 or Windows NT
  19. it uses Multi-Threading for smoother multi-tasking.
  20. You will hardly notice anything happens when it
  21. transfers headers, even on a PPP link.
  22. If it runs in Windows 95 or in NT 3.51 with the Shell Preview
  23. it will add a small icon in the Windows 95 TaskBar
  24. where you will be able to control everything from.

  26. It now also includes "Fast View" and "Fast Delete" functions.

  44. II. Why and How to Register
  45.  
  46. You can use this software for 30 days. After this trial period,
  47. if you continue to use it without registering it, then you are
  48. a *PIRATE*, and you should feel very bad !!!

  50. More seriously, you should register this program because 5$ is not
  51. much money for you, but it can be a lot for me !

  53. You should register because you will get e-mail as soon as there are
  54. new versions.

  81. III.  Why four versions
  82.  
  83. e-Mail Notify is released in four different versions. 
  84. This topic will explain you why this was necessary, 
  85. which version  you should use, and what the differences are.
  86.  
  87. Why Four Versions
  88.  
  89. e-Mail Notify uses specific features of the Windows 95 shell, 
  90. and also makes use of Multi-Threading for better performance.
  91. Since Win32s doesnÆt support Multi-Threading there was a need 
  92. for a specific Win32s version. I didnÆt intent to write this port,
  93. but some people asked me for it, and it wasnÆt that difficult.
  94. Windows NT 3.5 does not include all the stubs for the New Shell APIs 
  95. of Windows 95. For this reason, the Windows 95 version of e-Mail Notify 
  96. cannot run in Windows NT 3.5. Some people out there wanted e-Mail Notify 
  97. although there are running Windows NT, so I wrote the NT 3.5 port.

  99. Additionally, version 0.99.9 introduces an experimental WIN16 version. 
  100. It is not really tested, because I do not have everything needed 
  101. (like 10 different TCP/IP stacks) to test it properly.

  103. Which Version to use
  104.  
  105. If you run Windows fro Workgroups 3..11 or before and do not 
  106. have win32s version 1.25, use the win16 version, and do not 
  107. forget to tell me how it works.
  108.  
  109. If you run Win32s, use the Win32s version.
  110.  
  111. If you run Windows NT 3.5 use the Win NT 3.5 version.
  112.  
  113. If you run Windows 95, Windows NT 3.51, Windows NT 3.51 
  114. with the Shell Preview, or anything more recent than this including 
  115. stubs or implementation for the New Shell API and supporting Multi-Threading, 
  116. the use the Windows 95 version.

  119. Differences between Versions
  120.  
  121. If you do not have a Multi-Threading system, e-Mail Notify is much 
  122. less stable and well-behaving. In this case, be very careful not 
  123. to ask him something that you know wonÆt work. In addition, the Win32s 
  124. and Win16 versions are almost not tested, because I hate running 
  125. "Good Old Windows" now that I use Windows 95. 
  126. Version 0.99.9 has been tested using some beta tester out-there 
  127. and some bugs have been fixed now.

  129. If you do not run a system which has a Windows Taskbar (like Windows 95 
  130. or Windows NT 3.51 with the Shell Preview), you wonÆt see the nice Notify 
  131. Icon in this Taskbar and wonÆt be able to hide e-Mail Notify.
  132. In addition even if you are running Win95, if you run the Win32s 
  133. or Windows NT 3.5 version, you wonÆt have access to these features either.

  135. The best way to run e-Mail Notify is to run the Windows 95 version 
  136. in Windows 95 ! You will have access to all the features of the application !

  141. IV.  License Agreement
  142.  
  143. Read carefully all terms of this License agreement before using this Software. 
  144. If you do not agree with any term of this agreement, stop using this software immediately.

  146. 1.  Ludovic Dubost grants to you a non-exclusive, non-sublicense, license 
  147. to use this version of E-Mail Notify for 30 days. Once this period expires, 
  148. you will have to register the software, by sending 5$ by mail to Ludovic Dubost, 
  149. 9 Av du Colonel Bonnet, 75016 Paris and sending an e-mail to zic olympe.polytechnique.fr.

  151. updates of this program.

  191. V.  What's New in version 0.99.9
  192.  
  193. New:  you can now find all e-Mail Notify versions at

  199. Fixes yet another win16/win32s bug, some people had with connecting
  200. to the POP3 server. It should work much better now. I made a different
  201. Help File for Windows 3.1 systems, since it doesn't support the Help
  202. System. It would look as nice, and I still have to remove some unsupported
  203. links, so do not be surprised if the Help File looks weird.

  205. Two new functions have been added. "Quick View" and "Quick Delete".
  206. Check out the right click on the Mail headers or the Mail Menu to view
  207. and delete mail. I included maximum security in this function.
  208. Notify will verify the mail header before deleting to be sure to delete
  209. the right mail.

  215. This version is now a shareware. If it suits your needs, please

  219. A new version for Win16 has been introduced. The same warnings 
  220. apply as for the Win32s version. Please test it and tell me how 
  221. it works and which configuration you run.

  223. One new feature and many bug fixes for this version. Thank you to the 
  224. people who helped me and tested version 0.99.8.
  225. The new feature is the ability to run an external application every 
  226. time there is new mail. This looks like running the external reader, 
  227. but is a little more powerful, since notify is able to add the number 
  228. of mails in the command-line. If you want more information about this, 
  229. jump to the corresponding topic.

  231. Bug fixes allow the win32s version not to hang your system, like it was 
  232. the case before. My apologies to those who had problems with it. 
  233. This version should now be okay and up and running like the NT and Win32s versions 
  234. (the user interface will still be a little less responsive because of the monothreading).

  236. Another bug that has been fixed is the popup menu from the tray icon, 
  237. that was not behaving properly. Thanks to Felix Andrews from Microsoft 
  238. (author of FlexiCD from the Windows 95 PowerToys available at 
  239. http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/), it now behaves properly.

  241. The last bug is the one that cost me the most mail. 
  242. It was a mistake in the documentation. To start notify hidden, 
  243. you have to use the /H switch and not /U. Additionally, switches 
  244. are not case sensitive anymore.

  251. VII.  Installation and switches
  252.  
  253. Installation is very easy. Just copy the file in some directory
  254. and run e-Mail Notify. Additionally, there are some useful switches
  255. you can add as command-line parameters:

  259. This switch allows you to start e-Mail Notify hidden.
  260. Of course this option only applies to the Windows 95 version
  261. running in Windows 95 !

  265. If you add the Switch when Running e-Mail Notify, then it will
  266. run a specific configuration depending on the value of "n".
  267. Not adding this switch uses default configuration "0".
  268. This way you can run multiple instance of e-Mail Notify for
  269. different mailboxes you have.

  274. Run email /S0 and email /S1 will start to instances of  e-Mail Notify.
  275. Modifying options in any of these instances will not have any influence
  276. on the other instance or on the future instances of e-Mail Notify,
  277. unless they are ran with the same Settings Switch.
